From the Brush Arts and Literary Journal publishes works in fiction, creative nonfiction, scholarship, poetry, visual media, and multimedia categories from undergraduate students in a recognized National Collegiate Honors Council program. 

We review submitted work anonymously. Do not include any information, such as your name, that may specifically identify you. 

Please submit only original, unpublished work. 

We accept simultaneous submissions. When filling out the submission form, please check "Yes" if you have already submitted or are planning to simultaneously submit. Notify us immediately if it is accepted elsewhere. 

From the Brush does copy edit accepted works, but we expect contributors to submit polished, high-quality work. 

From the Brush unfortunately cannot pay its contributors at this time. However, we do our best to promote our contributors' works through our publication and social media. 

Literary 

• Maximum of 2 Short Fiction stories. 5000 maximum word limit. From the Brush will stylize your work to fit the design of our issue. Please format it with 12 pt Times New Roman font, double spaced, with one-inch margins. Upload a .pdf, .doc, or .docx file. 

• Maximum of 2 Creative Non-Fiction essays. 5000 maximum word limit. From the Brush will stylize your work to fit the design of our issue. Please format it with 12 pt Times New Roman font, double spaced, with one-inch margins. Upload a .pdf, .doc, or .docx file. 

• Maximum of 1 Scholarship. Please submit the entire work regardless of length. From the Brush will stylize your work to fit the design of our issue.  From the Brush will also only publish the abstract in our issue but will provide a QR code to read the entire essay or research paper separately. Please format it with 12 pt Times New Roman font, double spaced, with one-inch margins. Upload a .pdf, .doc, or .docx file. 

• Maximum of 3 Poems. There is no word limit. Please stylize the text how you wish it to be published. Upload a .pdf, .doc, or .docx file. 

• Please include titles in the file name and document. The file name should only be the title. In the document, the title should be at the top of the page. 

Arts

• Maximum of 3 Visual Art Pieces. This category includes photography, painting, or any other art that can be viewed solely as an image. Upload a .jpeg, .png, or .pdf file. 

• Maximum of 1 Multimedia piece. This category accepts any work that does not fit into any of the other categories. Video and audio are submitted to this category. The maximum video length is 45 minutes and upload a .mp4 file. If the submission is solely audio, such as music, the maximum length is 25 minutes and upload a .mp3 file. If you wish to add a visual art or written component to your piece, please refer to the guidelines above. If your multimedia piece does not fit into the usual video or audio submission for this category, please fill out the contact form that is embedded into the Contact Us page to help you. 

• Please include titles in the file name. The file name should only be the title. 

For each category you are submitting, please fill out a form. For example, if you would like to submit 2 poems and 1 fiction story, the two poems can be submitted in the same form but the fiction story must be submitted separately.
